St. Elizabeth School - Admissions

St. Elizabeth School is a nonpublic, coeducational, special education day program.

SES serves students from Central Maryland who are 11 to 21 years of age in our Middle/High and High school programs.

St. Elizabeth School provides an 11-month program for all students.

Students may earn a St. Elizabeth High School diploma or a Certificate of Completion.

SES offers educational, clinical, and vocational services to students diagnosed with:

  • Autism and autism spectrum disorders
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Emotional disturbance
  • Multiple disabilities that may include:
    • Learning disabilities
    • Orthopedic impairments
    • Speech and language disorders
    • Other health impairments including ADD and ADHD

SES faculty and staff design a program to meet the individual needs of each student and implement every student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP).

SES offers academic and life skills instruction to students with an optimal student/teacher ratio.

SES offers intensive support programs such as:

  • counseling, including individual and group therapies
  • social work services
  • art therapy
  • positive behavior supports
  • psychiatric consultation
  • physical, occupation, and speech and language therapies
  • nursing services
  • assistive technology services
  • occupational training
  • community based training
  • transition services that help students successfully transition from school to work

The SES philosophy is outcome-driven, relating learning to real-world occupations and actual life responsibilities. Occupational training categories include:

  • automotive and transportation
  • building and grounds maintenance
  • food service
  • health and care services
  • office and administrative support
  • production and assembly

SES has a computer lab and a data entry computer classroom. Every classroom has at least three computers, and computers in both lab and classrooms are connected to the Internet. Every student receives computer training in both lab and classrooms.

SES students are referred to us through their Local School System (LSS) in conjunction with the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). Each referred student’s tuition is paid by the LSS with local and state education funds.

Private pay students are also welcome.

The Referral Process: Seeking Nonpublic Placement

Students attending St. Elizabeth School are funded through their local school systems (LSS’s) if it is determined that the student’s educational needs cannot be met in the public school system. If a parent believes that his/her child’s needs are not being met in their current school placement, the parent may request an IEP (Individual Education Plan) team meeting. At the IEP meeting, the progress of the student is reviewed and the parent has an opportunity to discuss with the team concerns about the appropriateness of the public school placement. The parent should be prepared with documentation of the student’s need for nonpublic placement. This documentation may include recommendations and reports from teachers, therapists, and doctors who are following the student. It may also be helpful for the parent to secure the services of an educational advocate prior to the IEP team meeting.

If the IEP team makes a recommendation for nonpublic placement, the information is forwarded to the nonpublic special education office. That office has responsibility for forwarding the referral information to appropriate nonpublic school placements.

When St. Elizabeth School receives a referral for placement of a student, the referral is initially reviewed by the Admissions Director and then by the Admissions Team. If it is determined by the Admission Team that St. Elizabeth School might be able to implement the IEP, the Admissions Director will schedule an admissions interview with the student and his/her family. If the family, student, and Admissions Team agree that St. Elizabeth School would be an appropriate placement, the Admissions Director notifies the LSS Nonpublic Office that makes the final determination regarding placement.

Thank you for your interest in St. Elizabeth School. If you have additional questions or would like to schedule a tour, please contact Judy Malin, Admissions Director, at 410-889-5054, ext. 1118, or jmalin@stelizabeth-school.org.
